Internet Video #5

Modern Army Combatives Level 1

We have all heard some guy talking about learning super secret classified techniques taught to him by a Navy Seal or Army Ranger or some other fantasy spec-ops soldier and at times in our lives those stories may have impressed us. There has always been a shroud of mystery behind the training of our military elite and a sense of the superhuman seems to arise whenever their names are mentioned: Navy Seal, Green Beret, Force Recon and so on. And much of that fascination has been generated by the entertainment industry. Whether Sylvester Stallone's Rambo, Steven Segal's Under Siege or the upcoming The Marine featuring professional wrestler John Cena, we have had the idea that it is the super secret training that develops the super human soldiers. The truth is that they train in pretty much the same way using the same techniques that we do.

This week's video covers a chunk of the Modern Army Combatives Level 1 program. And while much of the instruction focuses on hand to hand combat the instructor uses a great quote that goes something like "the winner of the hand-to-hand fight in combat is the one whose buddy shows up first with a gun." I love that quote.

The video shows us that the Army has founded their combatives program on sound, well tested systems that can provide easily reproducible results. If you do a little research you'll find that almost all of the US Military is beginning to move in a similar direction.

Ultimately, there is no "super" sytem, there are no "supermen". Our military personnel are heros for what they do not what they have been taught and, the true "secret" to supremacy in a combative situation comes down to hardwork and time.

My favorite quote that sums up the "secret" has been attributed to Dan Inosanto and goes something like "you never live up to your expectations, you live down to your training."

The NFL Challenge

John Mclaughlin was an NFL lineman and part time sports caster who once made a comment disparaging BJJ and MMA fighters in general. His comment and claim that his physical "superiority" would allow him to overcome those "Jiu-Jitsu" guys led the owners of the UFC to approach Gil Castillo, who was with the UFC at the time, and ask him if he would accept a challenge match against McLaughlin. Castillo accepted and McLaughlin's pride wouldn't allow him to back down so the match was set and the NFL VS BJJ went down in history as one of the coolest "rub his nose in it" events in MMA history.

Something tells me that McLaughlin never referenced BJJ or MMA in a negative manner again.

Subs From Hell
By Gerald Harris

The Internet Video of the week is one of the coolest BJJ highlights I have ever seen, The video is absolutely crammed with some of the most incredible BJJ submissions from Gi, No-gi, and a few MMA matches.

The video features a ton of subs being performed by some of the best in the sport including BJ Penn, the Camarillo brothers, Café Dantes (with an absolutely awesome rolling/flying footlock), Margarida, Igor Gracie, Marcello Garcia, Minotauro (including my favorite all time MMA sub VS Crocop), Jean Jacques Machado and many, many more.

Titled "Subs from Hell", and accompanied by what is quite possibly the coolest Brazilian rap song I have ever heard, this is one Internet video you've just got to check out.

The Minotauro Instructional
By Gerald Harris

Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogeuira is widely considered to be the best Jiu-Jitsu stylist in the Heavyweight division of MMA. Whether you prefer your MMA to come in UFC or PrideFC flavors you cannot deny that Minotauro is easily one of the top two or three Heavyweights in the world. And outside of the dreaded Darth Fedor, Nog is arguably the best of the big boys.

The Internet Video of the week comes to us via Google Video and features almost 27 minutes of a Minotauro instructional filmed in Japan. While the video is targeted for a Japanese audience you can hear Nog delivering the instruction, to what appears to be a smallish seminar, in very decent English.

The techniques are solid, there's a really nice counter to an armbar defense, but in my opinion the value is largely in just watching someone on Nog's level work through the techniques. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on a full length instructional featuring Nogeuira.

One warning, the last time I watched this video it stalled at 21 minutes which may have been an issue with web traffic but could be a sign that the video itself has somehow degraded.
